The
Lynn Lecture Series was established in 2002 for the benefit of
Shiley’s faculty, residents and fellows, as well as doctors
in the community. The lecture series was made possible by the
generous contribution of Stan Ekstrom in honor of Martin and Dodie
Lynn. The Lynn Lectures invite world renowned ophthalmologists
to speak at the Shiley Eye Center bringing new research to light,
as well as expand the knowledge of the doctors and specialists
who attend.
On February 6, 2006, the Third Annual Martin and Dodie Lynn Lecture
took place featuring speaker Robert D. Fechtner, M.D., Professor
of Ophthalmology and Visual Science, and Director, Glaucoma Division,
University of Medicine and Dentistry New Jersey Medical School.
His lecture was titled “Secrets of the Glaucoma Surgeon”.
He discussed the latest surgical techniques and challenges presented
to glaucoma specialists today. Dr. Fechtner’s subspecialty
is glaucoma and his research interests include: mechanisms of
optic nerve damage in glaucoma; psychophysical testing of visual
function; computer assisted imaging technologies; and ocular pharmacology.
Dr. Fechtner completed his glaucoma fellowship here at the Shiley
Eye Center under a National Research Service Award from the National
Institutes of Health. He is an active member of numerous scientific
and medical organizations, on the editorial boards of various
medical journals, associate editor of the Textbook of Ocular Pharmacology
and has published over 60 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters.
The previous lecture was delivered on November 8, 2004 by Lee
M. Jampol, M.D., Chairman and Feinberg Professor of Ophthalmology,
Northwestern University School of Medicine. He presented “White
Spots of the Retina: a Unifying Theory”. Dr. Jampol’s
clinical practice and research have been largely in the area of
vitreoretinal disease. Dr. Jampol has played a major role in supervising
clinical trials, particularly in the area of age-related macular
degeneration.
The Lynn Lecture Series at the Shiley Eye Center continues to
bring highly respected speakers to San Diego’s community
of ophthalmologists to fully inform them of current topics in
their field of expertise.
