The
first step in any vision correction procedure is the creation
of a flap in the corneal tissue to allow unobstructed access
for the laser. Previously, a surgeon has created this flap
with a hand-held mechanical device which utilizes a surgical
blade. IntraLase® technology now utilizes the precision
of a laser to create this flap. The surgeon receives unprecedented
control and can even customize the corneal flap for every
individual patient. Because of its consistent accuracy, IntraLase®
now makes it possible to treat patients who were dismissed
as candidates for laser vision correction due to thin corneas.
While traditional LASIK is safe, IntraLase® reduces the
risk of complications reported with LASIK, offering added
assurance to some of our patients. Comparative clinical studies
have confirmed that most patients see better following laser
vision correction with IntraLase® than with previous methods.
The second step in any vision correction procedure is reshaping
the cornea with a laser, which improves the patient’s
vision. For those who are candidates, a new addition to laser
vision correction called Custom technology allows the LASIK
or LASEK procedure to be tailored to the distinctive characteristics
of the patient’s eye. Like a fingerprint, the vision
of every eye is unique.

"Our results
have shown that a
patient who opts for the combination of Custom and IntraLase®
is twice as likely to see 20/15 than a patient that chooses
to only use Custom"
Custom technology uses state-of-the-art
equipment to measure the eye and create a sophisticated map
of its individual characteristics. This map is then utilized
to tailor the entire vision correction procedure to the patients’
personal vision needs, helping them achieve their personal
best vision without contact lenses or glasses. At the heart
of the Custom technology is the WaveScan system which measures
the visual imperfections in the eye. This system is 25 times
more powerful than the technology commonly used to prescribe
glasses or contact lenses. The WaveScan provides a map of
the eye that will be digitally transferred to the VISX®
STAR S4 Excimer |
Laser, and utilized as a precise, detailed guide for how to
best improve the patient’s vision. According to results
from an FDA study, at one year after the procedure 100 percent
of the people whose vision was corrected with Custom technology
could pass a driving test; 98 percent had 20/20 vision or
better; and 70 percent could see better than 20/20 –
all without glasses or contact lenses.
With the combination of both technologies, our doctors can
now offer a new level of predictability, safety and accuracy
for each patient in all parts of their vision correction procedure:
custom diagnosis, custom flap, and custom treatment. “Our
results have shown that a patient who opts for the combination
of Custom and IntraLase® is twice as likely to see 20/15
than a patient that chooses to only use Custom,” states
Dr. Schanzlin. The Shiley Eye Center and Dr. Schanzlin continually

all our patients. |
