Shiley Eye Center faculty at the
AAO Annual Meeting

Shiley Eye Center faculty, staff and residents had a strong presence at The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Annual Meeting, November 15th to 18th in Anaheim, CA. They presented lectures, led seminars, participated in panel discussions and presented posters on some of the current research underway at the Shiley Eye Center.

William R. Freeman, MD, Director, Jacobs Retina Center, instructed the following courses: Modern Strategies for Management of CMV Retinitis in the HAART Era; Ocular Ultrasound; and Terapia Fotodinamica (PDT) para el Manejo de Membranas Neovasculares Coroideas. Dr. Freeman also discussed a paper on Intravitreal Injection of Triamcinolone Acetonide in Uveitis and spoke on Update on AIDS Therapy during the subspecialty days.

Don O. Kikkawa, MD, Chief, Division of Ophthalmic Plastics and Reconstruction, was a senior instructor of a course on Ethnic Considerations in Ophthalmic Facial Plastic Surgery. He was co-instructor for a course on The Art of Ptosis Repair: Pearls for Surgical Success. He was also instructor of the following courses: Lacrimal Disorders in Children; Cosmetic Applications of Botox: To Inject or Not to Inject; and Oculoplastics Surgery: Anatomic Foundations, Surgical Techniques, and Enhanced Results.

Leah Levi, MD, Chief, Neuro-ophthalmology, spoke on The Dilated Pupil during the subspecialty day on Neuro-ophthalmology.

Michael H. Goldbaum, MD, Professor and Co-Chief, Shiley Eye Center Retina Division, spoke on Retinal Imaging during the subspecialty day on Retina.

David J. Schanzlin, MD, Director, Refractive Surgery Center, was the speaker for the Barraquer Lecture: Additive Approaches to Corneal Surgery.

Robert N. Weinreb, MD, Vice Chair and Director, Hamilton Glaucoma Center, was the moderator for the symposium on Diagnosing and Monitoring Glaucoma 2003. Linda Zangwill, PhD, Associate Professor, was a speaker during this symposium. Dr. Weinreb also discussed a paper on Correlation of Retinal Thickness Analysis, Optical Coherence Tomography, and Glaucoma Status and also moderated a talk on Controversies I: Laser Therapeutics and Diagnostics during the subspecialty days.

The Shiley Eye Center presented two scientific posters. One was titled “Familiar and Unfamiliar Glaucomatous Visual Field Patterns Extracted with Variational Bayesian Independent Component Analysis,” which was a collaboration of a team that included Michael H. Goldbaum, MD (senior author), Pamela Sample, PhD and Robert N. Weinreb, MD, Catherine Boden, PhD, Te-Won Lee, PhD, Desmond McGuire, MD, and Terrence Sejnowski, PhD (co-authors).

The other scientific poster presented by the Shiley Eye Center was titled “Results of Silicone Oil Removal in Patients with Cytomegalovirus Retinitis Related Retinal Detachments,” which was the work of the following team: Victoria Morrison, MD, Chief Resident, Department of Ophthalmology (senior author) and William R. Freeman, MD (co-author).
