Acclaimed, Educational, Interactive Exhibit in San Diego
The human eye brings us the
miracle of sight. This summer San Diegans can learn more about
the eye's inner workings as part of VISION, a fascinating traveling
exhibit on display from July 13 - September 24, 2000 at the Reuben
H. Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park, sponsored by the Shiley
Eye Center.
Developed by the National Eye
Institute, the 2,000 square foot exhibit celebrates the world's
leading vision research, including discoveries made at Shiley.
It highlights two themes: 1. How the eye and brain interface to
create vision and 2. How researchers are developing novel strategies
to protect our eyesight from disease and developmental problems.
The exhibit is designed for all ages and features a number of
"hands on" activities that demonstrate how the eye focuses
light, how we perceive motion and color and how the brain processes
visual information into a meaningful picture.
In addition, VISION offers a
remarkable display of artifacts, including antique eyeglasses
that are on loan from the Foundation of the American Academy of
Ophthalmology. It also features "Eyeglasses of the Rich and
Famous:' an interesting display of eyeglasses worn by such luminaries
as Elton John, George Bush, and Miss Piggy. (This collection is
on loan from The Ohio State University College of Optometry).
An excellent outing to
share with your children and grandchildren, don't miss it!
