Laser Surgery For Nearsightedness:

Shiley's laser correction surgery for nearsightedness continues to dramatically enhance the lives of many. In this issue, we profile two such patients. Both patients received the LASIK treatment by David J. Schanzlin, M.D., Director of Keratorefractive Surgery and an international leader in his field. Using a computer-guided laser, this procedure reduces nearsightedness by gently sculpting the cornea to the proper shape. LASIK is an elective procedure successfully performed on nearly two million patients world wide since the mid 1980s (in Nov. '98 a similar laser surgery was approved for farsightedness). Candidates over the age of 18 with nearsightedness, astigmatism or farsightedness are given a complimentary consultation, which can be scheduled by calling toll free (877) 921-EYES. Friends Now Call Him Eagle-Eyes As a rancher Paul Ruegger's experience with contact lenses was not positive. He woke early to daily battles with wind, bugs, and heat. Once Paul heard of laser surgery, he began to thoroughly research the issue. His research provided the name of Dr. David Schanlzin, one of the world's leading refractive surgeons. However, his decision to receive care from Dr. Schanzlin meant driving four hour round trips from his home in Imperial Valley. During his appointments, Paul challenged the doctors with many detailed questions. "I was still a bit apprehensive, but they answered all my questions;' Paul recalls. " I could tell this team had the expertise necessary and my procedure would be successful." Paul was especially impressed by the ease of both the procedure and the postoperative course. Now with an amazing 20/10 in both eyes ... he wants to know if anyone would like to play pool?

Paul Ruegger continues to be amazed by the benefits of his "new" vision.

Patient Gains Both Physical and Emotional Clarity

To escape the relentless teasing as a young girl, Jacqueline Leeba often went without her thick glasses. A much clearer world was revealed once doctors prescribed contact lenses for her. However, she soon learned the perils of leading an active life with contacts. For years she inquired about new treatments for her myopia. Finally in Spring 1998, Jacqueline's doctor encouraged her to consider LASIK and referred her to Shiley. From her first interaction, Jacqueline loved the way Dr. Schanzlin's team treated her. "Everyone was caring and made me comfortable, reassuring me this was the right choice." Jacqueline, an interior designer and Feng-shui consultant, is emotional when describing her "new" vision, now far better than it was ever with contacts. "The surgery gives me much more independence;' she shares. "I don't have to rely on any aids to see situations clearly. Therefore, whether in work or my personal life, I feel confident my choices accurately represent the truth."
