The Shiley Eye Center at UCSD is proud to announce
the new Ophthalmology Residents for 2010.
Jeffrey received his BS in Neuroscience from Brown, where he was a member of Sigma Xi (scientific research honor society) and recipient of several research grants. Headed for a career in academic, Jeffrey will pursue a fellowship after his residency at Shiley.
His background includes coursework as an International Exchange Program student at two German universities; Tropical and Travel Medicine (Rostock), and evaluating the health care systems of the US, Great Britain, and Germany from an ethical perspective (Tübingen). He was also the graphics editor and part of the layout staff for the literary magazine The Catalyst: Bridging the Gap Between the Sciences and Humanities.
While at Brown, he earned first violin status in the Brown University Symphony Orchestra from 2001 to 2005.
Jeffrey speaks Manadarin and enjoys travel, having visited 99 cities in 14 countries, including Costa Rica, Japan, and most of Europe. He has a fondness for Bubble tea and Nintendo Wii, and also enjoys tennis, running, basketball, camping, hiking, and computers.

Jeffrey Liu
Brown University
This AOA member received his PhD in Neurobiology & Anatomy at U of Rochester, after receiving his BS in Biological Sciences from SUNY at Binghamton, where he earned Golden Key and Phi Beta Kappa honors and graduated summa cum laude. He is headed toward an academic career and currently favors pediatric ophthalmology and neuro-ophthalmology.
Sol was a member of the U of Rochester MD/PhD Student Council (events planning, newsletter and web site coordinator), and took part in career counseling events for medical students. He was a TA in human gross anatomy, served as an EMT and ambulance driver, and took part in the Himalayan Cataract Project in Nepal in September, 2008.
His musical interests range from digital music production (three years as a TA at Binghamton U); to performing live with his band “The Revelers” on drums, guitar, vocals; to recording compositions in his own music studio.
He also enjoys mountain biking and road cycling; ultimate frisbee; hiking with his dog; photography (travel and candid); and cooking (Thai, Chinese, and Vietnamese).

Solomon Shaftel
University of Rochester
Kevin was a Bill & Melinda Gates Millennium Scholar in high school. At Cornell, he became a National Collegiate Scholar, earning honors (distinction) in all subjects for his BS in Biochemistry and Chemistry. His MS in Clinical Research is from Case Western. Career goals are to become a physician-investigator at a large academic medical center.
In Cleveland, he was involved in community health initiatives such as inner city health fairs. At the Great Lakes Science Center, he was the “medical expert” student volunteer at Gunther von Hagen’s anatomical exhibit Body Worlds 2. He served on the Admissions Committee at his medical school; and, working with doctors at the Cole Eye Institute, helped establish a specialty ophthalmology service at the Free Clinic of Cleveland.
Kevin likes to listen to classical music, attend local orchestra events, and play the piano. He also plays tennis, is learning golf, and does The NY Times crossword puzzles. While traveling the United States, Asia, and Australia, he discovered a talent for outdoor photography. His travel goal is to visit all the ancient and modern wonders of the world.
