The Shiley Eye Center at UCSD is proud to announce the new Ophthalmology Residents for 2009.

Outside of medicine, Sara’s several and varied interests include her past participation in competitive varsity level basketball and being an avid soccer player, marathon runner, traveler (previous three years: Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Mexico, Costa Rica), mountain climber (Mont Blanc in France; Chirripo in Costa Rica; Alpamayo in Peru; Mt Olympus in Greece), and multi-linguist (fluent in French and Farsi; Spanish; basic Croatian).

Her passion for creative writing brought her to be a founding editor of Turtlequill, her medical school’s first literary journal; and musically, she is an accomplished violinist (Suzuki violin since age 5) and has been a member of several orchestras and jazz bands.

Milad completed his biochemistry major at UC Davis, graduating with highest honors, before persuing his medical degree at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. This AOA Honor Society member and recipient of multiple scholarships has been actively involved in medical research, as well as volunteering in medical clinics and with Meals on Wheels.

For a change of pace, Milad turns toward sports, including soccer, basketball, or tennis. Additionally, he enjoys cooking, and classical Persian music.

While completing his medical degree, Jonathan co-founded the UCSD School of Medicine’s Surgery Interest Group (Vice-President from 2004-2005) and was also President of the Ophthalmology Interest Group, 2007-2008. In addition, he has been very active in community ophthalmology and research.

Jonathan has been an accomplished musician since junior high school, participating in clarinet and piano competitions and ensembles, most recently the Brown University Wind Symphony and the UCSD wind ensemble. When Jonathan gets outdoors, it is most likely for tennis, in which he has competed from high school and his undergrad years at Brown.

The 2009 Residents, with their strong and varied backgrounds, will be excellent additions to the UCSD Shiley Eye Center.
