UCSD-TV RECEIVES FOUR PRESTIGIOUS TELLY AWARDS

Documentary about San Diego’s Canyonlands Takes Top Honor
LA JOLLA, CA—Four diverse programs from University of California, San Diego Television (UCSD-TV) were each honored with a prestigious Telly Award, an international competition honoring outstanding local, regional, and cable TV commercials and programs. One program, San Diego Canyonlands, received the highest honor -- the Silver Telly -- while San Diego Opera Spotlight: Carmen, State of Minds: Fall 2006 and Health Matters: Healthful Benefits of Pets each received a Bronze Telly Award.

The half-hour documentary San Diego Canyonlands profiles the efforts being made to preserve and restore San Diego's network of canyons and to create a regional Canyonlands Park that will highlight one of the county's greatest natural assets. Produced by UCSD-TV’s Shannon Bradley and hosted by Jennifer Whitelaw of Citizens Coordinate for Century 3 (C-3), San Diego Canyonlands was the result of collaboration among C-3, San Diego Civic Solutions and UCSD-TV. Major funding was provided by County Television Network (CTN) and the Hattie Ettinger Conservation Fund at the San Diego Foundation.

The first of UCSD-TV’s three Bronze awards went to San Diego Opera Spotlight: Carmen, a backstage look at the local production of Georges Bizet's verismo masterpiece. The half-hour program is part of San Diego Opera Spotlight’s tenth anniversary season and was produced by UCSD-TV’s John Menier in partnership with San Diego Opera.

The popular UCSD-TV series Health Matters, hosted by David Granet, M.D., also received a Bronze award. Produced by UCSD-TV’s Jennifer Ford, this half-hour installment, subtitled The Healthful Benefits of Pets, features Ruth MacPete, D.V.M., discussing how pets enhance our lives and our health.

The third Bronze Telly was awarded to State of Minds: Fall 2006. State of Minds is a UC systemwide magazine program produced by UCSD-TV’s Shannon Bradley for national broadcast on University of California Television (UCTV). This installment featured host Linda Schacht reporting from the UCLA campus with stories on UCLA's Terence Tao, the "Mozart of Math" who was recently awarded the coveted Fields Medal; the champion collegiate cycling team at UC Davis; a new air cargo explosives detection program from the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory that is now being tested at the San Francisco International Airport; and “Mayupatapi,” an Andean musical ensemble at UC Riverside.

Founded in 1978, the Telly Awards is the premier award honoring outstanding local, regional, and cable TV commercials and programs, as well as the finest video and film productions. The Telly Awards annually showcases the best work of the most respected advertising agencies, production companies, television stations, cable operators, and corporate video departments in the world.
