We would like to congratulate Felipe A. Medeiros, MD, PhD, Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology, on his appointment as the inaugural holder of the “Ben and Wanda Hildyard Chair for Diseases of the Eye”.

Dr. Medeiros’ research interests encompass advanced imaging analysis for the diagnosis and detection of glaucoma progression, new techniques for intraocular pressure measurement, functional impairment in glaucoma and prediction models and risk assessment in glaucoma. In his laboratory, he also is studying patients’ visual performance in glaucoma and other eye diseases.

Prior to joining our faculty, Dr. Medeiros was a glaucoma fellow at the Hamilton Glaucoma Center. In addition to his MD degree, he holds a PhD in statistics where he developed and applied advanced statistical techniques to glaucoma research. Dr. Medeiros has numerous publications and was recently named by Expertscape as one of the 5 leading glaucoma specialists in the world.

Ben and Wanda Hildyard, for whom the Chair is named, are former residents of La Jolla who are now deceased. Mr. Hildyard was a civil engineer who had his own firm and also worked at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Mrs. Hildyard worked at UC San Diego for over 16 years during the time of its early development.
