From
basic eye exams to the most advanced diagnostic tests and sophisticated
surgery, the physicians and staff at the Shiley Eye Center provide
comprehensive eye care at one convenient location. Immediately
adjacent to Shiley, The Anne and Abraham Ratner Children’s
Eye Center is the only dedicated eye facility in the region
designed to meet the very special vision needs of children.
In Fall 2003, the new Joan and Irwin Jacobs Retina Center and
the Hamilton Glaucoma Center opened their doors to continue
the cutting edge research and practice led by Shiley Center
physicians.
Built
in 1991, the Shiley Eye Center is home to academic and basic research,
innovative and unique surgical practices and patient treatment
for a wide variety of ophthalmologic concerns. Eleven permanent
practicing physician faculty members, nine PhD or MD research
scientists, eighteen fellows and eight residents work to bring
new solutions to light.
Dedicated
to serving those members of our population of all ages who face
challenges associated with poor restricted vision, the Division
of Community Ophthalmology programs reach out to bring eye testing
to the San Diego Head Start Program and Public Schools with the
EyeMobile for Children. A self-management educational program
assits those who are afflicted with Macular Degeneration providing
the means to cope with the illness and its side effects so that
they can better function within society.
