Meet the Fellows

Dr. Rupert Bourne

Dr. Bourne grew up in Surrey, in the countryside outside London, England. Later he did his medical degree (MB BS) at The Royal London Hospital in the East End
of London, where there's plenty of disease, as well as a Bachelor of
Science degree in pathology. His Medical elective was spent
working with children with diphtheria in Moscow. He graduated in 1994 and spent 6 months in Tanzania working on epidemic optic neuropathy and climbed Kilimanjaro, then several years as a Senior House Officer and then a Registrar (akin to Residency in the U.S) in ophthalmology, first in Bath and Oxford and then at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. Dr. Bourne continued his overseas interests including 2 national surveys of eye disease in Bangladesh and more recently, Pakistan, working with the International Centre for Eye Health in London as an Honorary Senior Lecturer. Recently he completed an MD thesis (akin to a PhD in the U.S.) on optic disc morphology in South East Asian populations. Currently he is working with Dr. Weinreb on the subject of glaucoma progression. He and his wife Diana (a family doctor in the UK but now a Spanish and pottery student with UCSD for a year!) enjoy watching their son, Oliver growing up on the coast (now 21m). Dr. Bourne enjoys running, mountaineering, geography, history, travel, languages (Russian and French). His most formative experience has been climbing the Arctic's 3 highest mountains in Greenland in 1998 as medical officer for the 2nd British expedition.

Dr. Jonathan G. Crowston

Raised in Austria and educated in the UK, Dr. Crowston graduated from the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine, London, with an MD and an intercalated Bachelor of Science Degree in Immunology. He gained Fellowship of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in 1994 and performed his Ophthalmology Residency based at Moorfields Eye Hospital. He was awarded a PhD at the Institute of Ophthalmology and University College London (2000) where he investigated fibroblast apoptosis in conjunctival wound healing. He performed a glaucoma fellowship and established an ocular wound healing laboratory at the Center for Vision Research in Sydney, Australia, prior to coming to UCSD in 2003. Outside work he is married to Joanna and has two children, James and Zoe. He speaks German, is a qualified ski instructor, a retired cricketer, enthusiastic linguist and has a newly acquired passion for road cycling.

Dr. Fay Cruz

Fay Charmaine Cruz, M.D. was born in Manila, Philippines and received her medical degree at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila. She did her phthalmology residency at The Medical City Hospital where she served as chief resident. She is currently an international fellow at the Anne and Abraham Ratner Children’s Eye Center. Upon completion of her fellowship in October 2005, she plans to return to Manila and start her own pediatric ophthalmology practice at the Medical City Hospital in Manila.

Dr. Robert Duncan

Dr. Duncan is a research fellow at the Hamilton Glaucoma Center of the University of California at San Diego. Dr. Duncan received his Ph.D. from the department of Psychology at UCSD where he studied the physiology of visual motion perception. Dr. Duncan completed a post-doctoral research fellowship at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies where he investigated how cortical structure affects perceptual abilities using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). From these efforts, we have learned that an individual’s fine visual acuity and fine tactile acuity depends greatly on the size of the primary cortical areas representing those senses. Dr. Duncan is applying the lessons learned from studying individual brain differences in healthy visual systems to the cases where vision is affected by Glaucoma. By learning how Glaucoma affects post-retinal visual pathways, we hope to gain a better understanding of how to treat the disease.

Dr. Michael Ehrenhaus

Dr. Ehrenhaus comes to us after graduating as Chief Resident in Ophthalmology from the Saint Vincent Catholic Medical Centers in New York. He has extensive experience with cataract and refractive surgery and has published numerous articles on LASIK and dry eyes. He has worked with world renowned Refractive surgeons in New York and has come to San Diego to work alongside Dr. Schanzlin as a clinical fellow in the Cornea division of the Shiley Eye Center.

Dr. Cintia Gomi

Cinta Gomi, M.D. was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil and attended medical school at the University of Sao Paulo. Her residency was completed at the University of Sao Paulo as well. In 2001, she began her fellowship at the Anne and Abraham Ratner Children’s Eye Center under the direction of its director, Dr. David Granet. She has been here at the Shiley Eye Center for two years. In the future, she plans to return to Sao Paulo and practice pediatric ophthalmology there.

Dr. Hiroya Goto

Dr. Esther M. Hoffmann

Graduating from the Johannes Gutenberg-University of Mainz, Germany, Dr Hoffmann continued to study medicine in Mainz and Lucerne, Switzerland and became resident at the Department of Ophthalmology, Mainz in 1999. She completed the medical registration in 2001 with her thesis on pre-and postoperative radiation therapy in rectal cancer. Her technical expertise is in digital image analysis using scanning laser ophthalmoscopes as well as
glaucoma analysis by means of different tonometry tools

In 2003 Dr. Hoffmann received the MAIFOR grant for analysis of fundus reflectivities following light stimulus (optical intrinsic activity) using a special setup. This grant is part of a program of the BMBF, which is the federal ministry of education and research in Germany. Since May 2004 she has been a research fellow at the Hamilton Glaucoma Center. Her hobbies playing violin and various outdoor activities such as running, skiing in the swiss mountains.
