Felipe A. Medeiros, M.D., M.S., Ph.D. is Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology at the University of California San Diego (UCSD). At the UCSD Shiley Eye Center, he specializes in the clinical and surgical management of all forms of glaucoma and cataract.
Dr. Medeiros is also Medical Director and Director of Visual Function Research of the Hamilton Glaucoma Center at UCSD. His research interests encompass many different areas in glaucoma, including identification of risk factors for development and progression of disease and methods and strategies for diagnosis, follow-up and management of glaucoma. He has published over 180 peer-reviewed publications in major Ophthalmology journals, 40 book chapters and 4 books on the evaluation of the optic nerve, visual field, intraocular pressure and progression of glaucoma. His book “Optic Nerve in Glaucoma” has been published in English with translations to several languages, including Portuguese, Spanish and Croatian. His research has been funded by grants from federal and private institutions. He is the principal investigator on a National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant to evaluate functional impairment in glaucoma. In this project, Dr. Medeiros is currently evaluating the impact of the disease on activities of daily living in patients with glaucoma, using techniques such as driving simulation. The results of this research will have major impact in the understanding of how glaucoma affects quality of life and how physicians can better determine which patients are at higher risk for developing impairment from the disease.
Dr. Medeiros has a Master degree in Statistics and has developed and applied advanced statistical techniques to glaucoma research which have set new standards in the field. He has developed the first validated risk calculator for prediction of glaucoma in patients with ocular hypertension, a condition which affects approximately 10% of the population. He is the recipient of numerous awards in Ophthalmology, including the World Glaucoma Association Research Award, the Ronald Lowe Medal from the Australian and New Zealand Ophthalmology Society, the American Glaucoma Society Mid-Career Award, the American Glaucoma Society Clinician Scientist Award, the American Academy of Ophthalmology Editor’s Choice and the American Academy of Ophthalmology Achievement Award. He is an elected member of the Glaucoma Research Society, a prestigious and exclusive society which is limited to only 70 individuals from throughout the world. He also served as a member on the World Health Organization (WHO) Committee on Prevention of Blindness and as a member of the Research Committee of the American Glaucoma Society and the Associate Advisory Board of the World Glaucoma Association. Dr. Medeiros is member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Glaucoma and International Glaucoma Review and serves as a reviewer for several other major ophthalmology journals, including Ophthalmology, Archives of Ophthalmology, American Journal of Ophthalmology, and Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences.
Dr. Medeiros has oriented several postdoctoral fellows from different parts of the world.
He is Professor of the Post-Graduation Services at the Federal University of Sao Paulo
and University of Sao Paulo, the two premiere medical institutions in Latin America. He
has delivered several keynote lectures throughout the world in major Ophthalmological
meetings, including the Russian Congress of Ophthalmology, Nordic Congress of
Ophthalmology, Madrid Glaucoma Symposium, Jules Gonin Switzerland, Portuguese Glaucoma Symposium, Brazilian Glaucoma Society, among others.
