David B. Granet, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.A.A.P., F.A.A.O.,
is the Anne Ratner Chair of Pediatric Ophthalmology
and Director of the Anne F. and Abraham Ratner Children’s
Eye Center located within the Shiley Eye Complex. He
is the Director of the Divisions of Pediatric Ophthalmology
and Eye Alignment Disorders for the University of California,
San Diego and Professor of Ophthalmology and Pediatrics
at UCSD. He is also the Adult ocular motility specialist
for the Shiley Eye Center.
Pediatric Ophthalmology and Eye Alignment Disorders
(strabismus) are Dr. Granet’s specialties. His
interests also include nystagmus and learning disorders.
In addition to his expertise in childhood eye misalignments
and disorders, he has extensive experience in Adult
eye movement problems as well as state-of-the-art adjustable
suture strabismus surgery.
Dr. Granet is one of the founders of the Shiley Thyroid
Eye Disease Clinic. His work has led him to be named
in “Best Doctors in America” and “Top
Doctors” and he is the only Pediatric Ophthalmologist
voted into “Best Doctors in San Diego.”
He also earned the Achievement Award for the Academy
of Ophthalmology and the Honor Award for the American
Association of Pediatric Ophthalmology.
Dr. Granet earned a medical degree from Yale University
School of Medicine where he served as President of his
class. He spent a transitional internship year at UCLA-Harbor
Medical Center and served as a chief resident at New
York University Medical Center. He then completed a
special two year fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology
and ocular motility disorders at the renowned Children’s
Hospital of Philadelphia and the Scheie Eye Institute
of the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center. He
selected UCSD and the Shiley Eye Center for his practice.
Recently, Dr. Granet published groundbreaking work on
a new and simple way to identify childhood eye disorders
using a digital camera and computerized analysis. His
diverse research interests have ranged from devising
a new technique to facilitate Adult adjustable suture
eye muscle surgery to re-evaluating the use of electro-physiologic
testing in apparently blind infants. At the National
Pediatric Ophthalmology meetings, Dr. Granet has presented
his work on a new and improved approach for anesthesia
during strabismus surgery; a simplified system for calibrating
complex eye glass prescriptions; Botox use in Thyroid
Eye Disease; and new work on ADHD’s affect on
the eyes. He is considered an authority on ocular protection
in sports and the role the visual system contributes
to athletic performance.
Because of his clear and engaging speaking style, he
was selected to host UCSD-TV’s “Health Matters”
archived on (http://www.uctv.tv). He is also the founder
and moderator of the International Pediatric-Ophthalmology
Internet discussion group. Dr. Granet’s infectious
good nature and enthusiasm make him perfectly suited
to work with children.
