Barbara L. Brody, Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology
and Family and Preventive Medicine at the University of
California, San Diego (UCSD), also serves as the Director
of the Community Ophthalmology Division at Shiley Eye
Center. Renowned for her groundbreaking research in the
area of the psycho-social aspects of eye disease, Professor
Brody has created intervention programs to improve the
lives of people with age related macular degeneration,
the leading cause of incurable vision loss in the older
adults. Brody’s work in the area of psycho-social
impact of eye disease has been among the first research
in this area worldwide and has been recognized nationally
and internationally.
Professor Brody in
collaboration with Dr. Brown, Chairman of the Department
of Ophthalmology and Director of Shiley Eye Center at UCSD,
created the first self-management program for an ocular
disease. The research has been published in leading peer-reviewed
journals such as Archives of Ophthalmology and Ophthalmolog.
In her role as Director, Division of Community Ophthalmology
Outreach and Education, Professor Brody along with Dr. Brown,
is also leading academic based community service and research
programs for Shiley Eye Center’s pediatric division,
the Abraham Ratner Children’s Center. Professor Brody
has been a member of the UCSD faculty since 1974 and received
the UCSD Chancellor’s Associates Award for Excellence
in Teaching in 1992.
