Our Strategy

We send specially trained staff to the many community locations where children are concentrated- day care centers, Head Start programs, schools, preschools, and schools for children with special needs- to perform a simple, highly accurate vision screening that determines which children are at risk.

Children who "fail" the screening receive a complete eye examination in the EyeMobile for Children, a fully-equipped mobile pediatric eye clinic. When needed, the program provides glasses to children within days. Children in need of further medical treatment for cases of strabismus(poorly aligned eyes), tumors, or cataracts, are referred to and seen by Shiley's ophthalmologists or other community eye specialists.

The third stage of the program is demonstrating that early recognition and treatment of eye problems in this age group will result in improved school readiness and learning for San Diego County's children.
