Student Experiences

Comments from UCSD students who volunteered with the Save Our Children's Sight and are now attending medical schools or schools of optometry across the country:

"The experience has shown me how much of a need there is to screen the children at an early age. I have seen situations ranging from parents assuming that their kids didn't have any eye problems (which was not true) to cases where a serious eye problem was overlooked by the parents and teachers."

"The opportunity to be part of the EyeMobile program was an experience to remember. I loved working with the preschool children. It was really fulfilling to watch the optometrist work with the kids and it made me realize even more how much I want to improve the health of children."

"My time with Save Our Children's Sight has fully confirmed my commitment to medicine. As a volunteer I have traveled to schools to perform vision screening, administered visual acuity tests, assisted optometrists on a mobile pediatric clinic, and aided psychologists in testing the achievement of children before and after receiving their complimentary glasses. This combination of medicine, research, humanity, and serving those in need have made it clear that becoming a physician is what is right for me."
