"Hot Wheels" Danny
Studies have shown that a 2-line reduction or more from 20/20 in visual acuity can significantly increase one's risk of being involved in a car accident. Although, driving cars may not be on Danny's mind yet, driving tricycles in the school yard is. Ricardo "Danny" (age 4) failed his routine vision screening at his preschool and was subsequently seen in the EyeMobile. The exam revealed that Danny was indeed in need of glasses. Danny turned out to have significantly strong astigmatism to put him at risk for amblyopia. His vision before correction at 20/200 (in both eyes) would have been bad enough to make him bump into all sorts of things on his tricycle.
A few months after receiving his glasses, Danny was retested using a computerized vision test, by project staff at his school location, to see whether his vision had improved while wearing his eye glasses. This time, the tester met Danny and his mom at the school, and since he'd been faithfully wearing his glasses, his vision had improved to 20/40 in both eyes! His mom reported that she encourages him to wear his glasses at all times and that Danny loves wearing them. For some kids it's seeing leaves on trees. For Danny it's racing red tricycles around his school and enjoying every moment of it. His glasses are helping him get ready to succeed in kindergarten, and of course to ride his tricycle.
